Definition of Protocol
v Protocol is one of the most important components of a computer network.
v Protocol means a set of rules, agreed upon ways or a communication language which all computer and devices understand.
v A protocol defines error checking, how data will be sent and received, and transmitting data between the systems.
v Although each network protocol is different, they all share the same physical cabling. This common method of accessing the physical network allows multiple protocols to peacefully coexist over the network media, and allows the builder of a network to use common hardware for a variety of protocols. This concept is known as “protocol independence“.
